Keep Safe

    • Power off device before starting.
    • CAUTION: Discharge battery below 25%. Puncturing can cause fire or explosion.
    • DISCONNECT BATTERY BEFORE disconnecting ANY other cables. Do not reconnect until ALL new cables are in place.
    • DO NOT PRESS GLASS in corners or near home button. Can crack.
  • DO NOT insert tools or picks too far. Doing so will damage lcd and cables.
    • Back up device via iCloud or iTunes before proceeding.

    IMPORTANT: Test BEFORE Closing

After the new part is connected, attach the home button and power on.

Test image and touch screen.  Move around entire screen and test all letters. Check WiFi, camera, volume, mute, power.

Tip: Remove any film(both sides) and clean off fingerprints as well.

    Set up Work Space

Most repairs take between 30 min and 2 hours.  Budget 2 hours so you are not rushed.  Tip: Use another device to watch the video and pause as you do the repair.  No video covers all situations, so we suggest watching 2-3 BEFORE you start.  Have a clean, well-lit space, preferably with white top (even a piece of paper) to work.

WARNING: Static electricity can damage your device.  Use proper grounding techniques; anti-static wrist strap or touch metal to discharge any static before starting.  Avoid carpeted areas. Use latex gloves or rubber mat.

These screws are TINY and different lengths!  Mark and number each screw and piece as removed and its related assembly. Tip: tape to paper or put in a container. CAUTION: If screws are put in the wrong spot, it can damage the device.

Items to have: Safety glasses (IMPORTANT - Glass can shatter and bits of glass can fly up!), hair dryer / heat gun, clear tape, something to prop open iPad.

    Opening Device

Go slow and be careful. This is  time consuming.  To loosen adhesive, apply heat to edges of glass. Use a hair dryer or heat gun at a low setting - no closer than 2 inches and keep it moving.  If glass is shattered, tape it all over to hold it.

Slide opening tool between top of glass and frame. Work your way around the screen. Insert picks to keep separated.  Follow a video exactly.  Note: DON’T FORCE. Apply more heat if needed.

CAUTION:  DO NOT INSERT opening tool or picks in too far or can damage display and cables. At top or bottom, insert no more than 1/4 inch (6mm). On sides, no more than 1/16 inch (2mm).  This is very small!  Be careful near cables, home button, camera, antennas.  Note the position of these. Tip: put a piece of tape to identify. Measure with ruler. Attention to detail key here.

DO NOT open all the way. Keep the angle between screen and body to less than 90 degrees to protect connectors. Prop open with something.

    Flex Cables

IMPORTANT: Don’t bend flex cables. Very fragile. Plug / unplug with caution.

Ensure flex cables are properly connected with “clicking” sound.  Start at one end of the connector and use a gentle rocking motion. Use tools like spudger not fingers. Don't force. If not right, check for issues like a loose screw.

During reassembly, make sure that the connectors are fully seated in sockets, or you may have display issues. Note position /orientation when removing.

    Adhesive and Sealing

You need a perfect fit to seal properly.  Clean all adhesive from aluminum housing with isopropyl alcohol (85%+) or goo-off, and scrape away with a flat tool like a putty knife / razor blade then and use alcohol wipes for rest.

Cables need to be flush and folded properly. Can’t be kinked or squeezed. When closing, use a spudger to push the digitizer cable into gap and keep it from getting caught. Confirm frame is not even slightly bent.

Adhesive is pressure-activated. Remove top layer to expose adhesive.  Apply a LIGHT pressure for at least 6 hours while drying/curing. Tip: Place iPad face down on a towel and put a 3" thick book on it or use clamps. DO NOT PRESS GLASS IN CORNERS OR NEAR HOME BUTTON or can crack.

Enjoy your device again.  And know

you did your part today for our earth.

    Transfer Home Button

Note: transferring the home button is the only way to retain Touch ID feature.  The button assembly includes button, spacer, gasket, cable and bracket (depending on model). Transfer all pieces.  Take your time and be gentle.  Disconnect button cable, remove black tape over cable, heat button slightly to press and remove then peel off cable along glass.  Rubber gasket tears easily.

To reattach the bracket, prep it and glass area with acetone / isopropyl alcohol. Scrape off old adhesive. Use double-sided adhesive or dab of glue like B7000. Test button and make sure it clicks when pressed.  If not, the bracket is misaligned.

    Troubleshooting

    Try This First

    • Confirm you have the right part. Check model number.
    • Do a soft reset of the device.
    • Make sure the device is charged.
    • Go back over work. Reseat/reconnect cables to ensure secure.
    • Inspect and clean connectors. Use 95% alcohol on a q-tip.
    • Try re-installing the original part.

    Glass Touch Digitizer

Touch not working.  Make sure it is perfectly clean and then reseat digitizer cable. Confirm cable not pinched (folded too much) or damaged. Ensure fully seated within connector clamps, and line on cable lines up with edge of logic board connector. Lock down tabs with clicking sound.

Part of touch screen not working (Blocking).  If part such as top or side not working, digitizer plug may be off center or flex cable is bent. Check if motherboard FPC connector plugs are damaged with missing/ bent pins.

Dead spots on screen. There may be dust or debris on the cable ends / connectors. Check and clean.

iPad acting erratic/ghosting (Glitching). Usually cable placement issues. Test if works before reassembling with LCD and closing. Digitizer cable needs to be tucked in the same way as it was removed and not pinched. Reseat cable. Also do hard reset.

    LCD Display

All white or all black display.  Usually caused by internal software not accepting new parts. Perform a soft reset.  If doesn’t correct, battery was likely not disconnected at proper time.  See online help.

No backlight and no display . LCD is not plugged in correctly. Re-install.

Yellowish blotches. Caused by too much pressure on the LCD.
